Removing a service completely To delete a service, you may be tempted to hack the registry settings under (HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services) this is not a reliable or recommended method, far better is to use the SC command:SC delete NameofServiceTodeleteEnable or Disable Ports
Many services and applications rely on the use of a specific PORT - to determine if a particular port is enabled for use, review the list of Service names and port numbers held in the "services" file ('windows\system32\drivers\etc\services')
Installing a good firewall is the easiest way to manage this.
Before changing any of the defaults - use the links above to find what exactly the service does. The Elder Geek also has some good advice about services.
It is inadvisable to disable a service without being aware of the consequences, always start by setting the service to manual, reboot and test for any problems.
A service set to manual may be automatically restarted if another service is dependent on it.
A service set to disabled will not restart even if it's required to boot the machine!
Stopping or disabling a service will generally save a small amount of memory and will reduce the number of software interrupts (cpu message queue.) The main reason for tinkering with services is to harden the system against security vulnerabilities. Disable everything that you don't need or use - then any future problems with those services cannot affect the machine.

5-Speed up menu display
Ans- Microsoft Windows XP uses many visual effects to provide a rich, friendly interface. One of these settings allows menus to fade into view when you open them. This visual effect is so smooth that you may never have noticed it; however, the effect does cause menus to take a little longer to appe

To adjust the vertical space between icons
1. | Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties. |
2. | In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Appearance tab. Then, click Advanced. |
3. | Click the Item list, and then click Icon Spacing (Vertical). |
4. | In the Size box, decrease the number to move icons closer together, or increase the number to add space between icons. (The smaller the number, the less space there will be between the icons. Conversely, the larger the number, the greater the space will be between the icons.) |
5. | Click OK. |
6. | To change the spacing for your existing desktop icons to the spacing you specified in step 4, right-click your desktop, click Arrange Icons By on the shortcut menu, and then click Align to Grid. |
7. | Next, right-click your desktop, click Arrange Icons By on the shortcut menu, and then click Auto Arrange. |
Microsoft Windows XP arranges your desktop using the new icon spacing you specified. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to return your desktop settings to their original state.
On a monitor with 800 × 600 resolution, changing the default icon spacing from 43 to 39 squeezes eight icons into each column, up from the original seven icons.
7-Create a password reset disk

Windows Update failing with error code 0xd0000006
Ans-The Solution
The Windows event log showed disk warnings and disk errors around the time when the Windows Update failed, so I decided to perform some basic diagnostic maneuvers on the hard disk first. I scheduled chkdsk to run at next boot (with the error-correction options set) and powered-down the computer. Then I started the computer again and let chkdsk run.Sure enough, it found plenty of errors. And fixed them automatically. The entire chkdsk run took quite some time (I estimate around 45 minutes), but once completed, I was able to restart the computer and apply all the Microsoft Updates without any problem.
Sure enough, the underlying cause of disk errors needs some additional investigation, because usually this type of errors indicates that the hard disk will fail entirely sooner or later. But it can also be that your hard drive has a number of bad sectors and that it will continue to run reliably for many years, once chkdsk has marked these sectors as bad.
Chkdsk is often times overlooked as a diagnostic tool, but it has proven more than once to be a powerful Windows tool when dealing with problems as frustrating as a failing Windows Update.
3-
Modify the Windows XP System Properties logo
The Windows XP System Properties logo is often changed by computer manufacturers. Hardware vendors use this general system information dialog to brand your computer with their own logo and support contact information.
Ans-
In this tip you can learn how you can insert your own logo in the system properties dialog and complete it with your own contact information.
To invoke the system properties dialog, click the Start button, right-click "My Computer" and select "Properties".
This will open up your general system information dialog. On our Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro laptop, the Windows XP System Properties logo looks like this :
If you want to put your own graphic in there, you should create your image in a .bmp graphic file. It's also a good idea to create this bitmap image with the same background shade of gray (RGB: 192, 192, 192) used in the Properties dialog. Otherwise, you risk letting Windows make its own judgments regarding color contrast and background shading.
The next thing to consider is the image size. The system properties dialog only offers enough real estate for an image of about 180 (wide) x120 (high) pixels. Make sure that you can fit your logo in this area.
Once you have created your logo and saved it as a .bmp file, copy it over to the system32 subfolder of your Windows system folder. If you don't know where your system folder is :
- Click the Start button and select "Run"
- In the "open" field, enter "cmd" (without the quotes) and click ok
- Windows will open up a dos command window
- In the command window, type "set system" (without the quotes)
- Look for the line that contains "SystemRoot", this is where your system directory is (generally, the Windows XP system folder is c:\windows)
Additionally you can create a new file in this same folder and name the new file oeminfo.ini
In this file you can enter your contact information like in the example below :
[General]
Manufacturer=Windows Help Central
Model=ShowCase
Manufacturer=Windows Help Central
Model=ShowCase

4- Your Task Manager Disabled by Administrator
Getting the dreadful "Task Manager Disabled by Administrator" message when trying to launch your Windows task manager? You are not alone! There are a number of reasons why this message can appear, but if you are a home computer user, chances are that your task manager has been disabled by some form of malware or a virus infection
Ans-
The symptoms that you experience when your windows task manager has been disabled are usually comparable to the situations described below.
The symptoms are:
Task manager grayed out when you right-click your windows task bar
Or, when you try to manually launch your windows task manager (by entering taskmgr.exe in the run box), the "task manager disabled by administrator" message appears
Usually this is caused by a change in the windows registry and you should be able to enable task manager by entering the correct settings in your windows registry.
The easiest way to do that is clicking on this registry fix and run it. That should solve your disabled task manager problem.
Alternative solution:
If you are hesitant to execute code from the internet (you always *should* consider very carefully what code you allow and don't allow to run on your machine, since the internet is a crazy phenomenon with malicious code and strange individuals all over the place) you can also look at the method described below in order to enable task manager.
The easiest way to do this is copy the next line of text and paste it in the "run" box of your start menu:
REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
To do so: - select the entire line of text above
- right-click your selection and click "copy"
- then click your start button and select "Run..."
- in the "run" box, right-click and choose "paste" to enter the line of code from above
- then click the "Ok" button
If you still think the above solution gives you insufficient control over what's happening in your windows registry, you can of course always manually make the registry changes.
- Click the start button
- Select "Run"
- Type "regedit" in the run box (without the quotes) and click ok
- Windows will open up the registry editor.
- In the registry, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
- In the right-hand side of the screen, delete the value named DisableTaskMgr
- Close the registry editor.
Just for the sake of completeness, I also mention the setting in the windows group policy editor that can cause the "task manager disabled by administrator" message. The windows group policy editor is another way of dealing with this issue
- Click your start button
- Select "Run"
- Type "gpedit.msc" in the run box to open up the group policy editor
- Click the "ok" button
- Navigate to User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options/Remove Task Manager
- Double-click " Remove Task Manager "
- Set the policy to Not Configured
- Done!
If you don't use the Recycle Bin to store deleted files , you can get rid of its desktop icon all together.
Run Regedit and go to:

How to install a network printer on your home or office network
. First, connect the printer to your network by connecting one end of a Cat 5 cable (which should have come with your printer) to your router:
And the other end into the network port of your printer. Turn your printer on and wait for it to become ready.
2. Next you’ll need to get the IP address of your printer. The IP address is what will tell your computer where to find your printer on the network. All network printers allow you to print a configuration sheet which will list basic information about the printer along with the current network configuration.
For most printers, this involves pressing the Menu button on the printer, going to the Information option and choosing Print Configuration. You will be looking for the TCP/IP section:
The IP Address is what you’ll need for the next steps.
3. The last step is to add the printer to your computer. Click on Start, then Printers and Faxes.
If you don’t see this in your Start Menu, you can go to Start, Control Panel and then click on Printers and Faxes there. Click Add Printer from the task pane on the left.
The Add Printer wizard will begin, so click Next to get started. On the next screen you’ll be asked whether your printer is a local printer or a network printer. These options are confusing because a network printer is actually referring either a printer connected to another computer or a printer on a print server. Our printer is a stand-alone printer and so you must select Local printer attached to this computer and make sure that you uncheck the box for automatically detecting the printer.
Click Next and you’ll be asked to select the printer port. Since our printer is a network printer with a IP address, we need to select the Create a new port option and choose Standard TCP/IP Port.
Click Next and you’ll get another wizard to add a TCP/IP printer port. On the main wizard screen click Next. In the first text box, Printer Name or IP Address, enter the IP address from the printer configuration sheet you printer earlier.
Click Next and depending on the printer you have, you may get one more dialog before the end of the wizard. If the network card for the printer cannot be identified, the wizard will ask you to choose the card type. You can leave the default of “Generic Network Card” and click Next.
Click Next and click Finish. You will then continue on with the Add Printer wizard and you’ll need to either choose the printer from the list of manufacturers or click Have Disk and insert your printer driver cd in the computer.
Click Next and enter a name for your printer and click the Yes radio button if you would like the printer to be your default printer.
Click Next and you’ll be asked whether you want to share the printer or not. Click No because anyone else who wants to connect will be able to do so following the same steps.
Click Next and click Yes to print a test page and make sure that the computer and printer can communicate!
Click Next and then click Finish! The new printer will appear in your Printers and Faxes screen and you’re ready to print
Click on the "Recycle Bin" string in the right hand pane. Hit Del, click OK.
